The Prime Minister of Georgia responds to the statements of MEPs, international organizations, diplomats about the recent developments in Tbilisi.
"It is the fourth day since a violent assault was carried out on the Presidential Palace of Georgia - an assault whose declared objective was the overthrow of the government elected by the Georgian people.
Despite this, during these days, not a single organization or state which habitually claim the right to immediately assess Georgia`s internal political developments, criticize the country and issue it instructions - including the US, the EU, or specific EU member states - has made a statement condemning or distancing itself from the attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government and the violent assault on the Presidential Palace of Georgia.
Moreover, the EU, the OSCE/ODIHR and other entities have even gone so far as to issue statements of an opposite nature.
Naturally, the failure to condemn or distance themselves from this attempted overthrow and the accompanying violence can easily be interpreted as an indirect but clear expression of support for such actions.
The tragic political reality in the European Union is clearly illustrated by today`s statement from the European People`s Party (EPP).
Let me remind you that the EPP is the largest political grouping in Europe, encompassing the majority of the continent`s governing parties. It should also be remembered that among its members is Georgia`s United National Movement - the political force that established a bloody authoritarian regime in Georgia and, for 9 years, distinguished itself through systematic violations of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
At a time when the UNM and other radical opposition groups have attempted to overthrow the legitimately elected Government of Georgia and have brutally assaulted multiple police officers - 2 of whom narrowly escaped death, thanks God - the EPP, instead of condemning the perpetrators of violence and enemies of Georgian democracy, has called for sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili and other leaders of the ruling team.
This statement from the EPP vividly helps Georgian society understand the tragic consequences of the EU"s loss of sovereignty and the dangers of a Europe governed by external, bureaucratic control.
Against this background, the Georgian public must ask itself a simple question: after this, can the statements of these states and organizations carry any value? The answer, of course, is self-evident - the statements of those who cannot conceal their irritation toward the Georgian people, their democratic choice, and their steadfast struggle for peace, have no value - neither now nor in the future.
Over 35 years of independent political life - and especially during the past five years - the Georgian people have gained both experience and wisdom, enabling them to clearly discern who truly stands as a friend of Georgia and who does not wish the country well. It is precisely this wisdom and understanding that form the strongest guarantee that Georgia`s peaceful and stable development will continue, regardless of who may attempt to plunge our country into turmoil or war.
With the unwavering support of the Georgian people, the Government of Georgia has successfully defended the country over the past five years against every externally driven attempt to instigate war and unrest - and it will continue to do so in the future. This is our firm promise to the Georgian public", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
