Georgia elected as a candidate country for membership in the Executive Board of the World Health Organization

Georgia has been nominated as a candidate for a seat on the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation [WHO].

According to the Ministry of Health, the selection process involved the participation of 53 member states, with Russia among the contenders.

During the voting, the majority supported Georgia’s candidacy. On behalf of the country, First Deputy Minister Irakli Sasania has been nominated for this position.

The elections took place in Copenhagen during the 75th session of the Regional Committee for Europe, with Georgia’s candidacy confirmed through a secret ballot. The nominated candidates will be presented to the World Health Assembly in May 2026, where the final approval of the candidates for the Executive Board will be decided.

The WHO’s Executive Board is elected for a 3-year term. Its primary responsibilities include implementing the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, offering expert advice, and facilitating the organisation’s overall work.
