The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe [ALDE] adopted a resolution at its party congress in Brussels condemning what it described as “rigged elections” in Georgia and calling on the EU to impose targeted sanctions.

It should be mentioned that ALDE counts among its members senior EU officials, including the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, and the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.

Besides, ALDE maintains close ties with representatives of the United National Movement [UNM], Lelo, Girchi - More Freedom, Strategy Aghmashenebeli [they regularly attend ALDE gatherings, maintain close contacts with European bureaucrats affiliated with the alliance].

Resolution adopted by Kallas’s and Kos’s party - titled “Condemning the Fraudulent Elections of October 2025 and the Authoritarian Consolidation of Georgian Dream” – doesn’t provide details or evidence of alleged electoral fraud in Georgia.

By endorsing this party resolution, both Kallas and Kos have revealed, critics say, that they are not acting as impartial EU officials representing all member states, but rather as political figures aligned with a specific agenda aimed at facilitating the return of the collective UNM to power in Georgia.

The ALDE resolution condemns Georgia’s “rigged elections” without citing concrete examples of violations. Meanwhile, the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission’s 2024 report made no mention of election rigging.

On the contrary, despite acknowledging tensions, it stated that “Election Day was generally well organized and proceeded in an orderly manner from a procedural standpoint”.
