We want peace, Putin doesn’t... We are ready to talk in any format: bilateral or trilateral – Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived at the White House for a meeting with Donald Trump. The leaders are discussing military support for Kyiv, the supply of Tomahawk missiles, the prospects for peace talks with Russia and the possibility of putting pressure on the Kremlin.

During the conversation, both presidents made a number of high-profile statements about the future of the war, security guarantees for Ukraine and the role of the United States in achieving peace.

The American president expressed high praise for his Ukrainian colleague: “He is a very strong leader who has been through a lot. We get along great. Today we will talk about my conversation with Putin yesterday, where certain principles were outlined, and we will see if we can resolve it”.

The President of Ukraine, in turn, emphasized that a common position of the allies is needed to end the war: “We understand that Putin is not ready (to end the war), but I am confident that with your help we will be able to end this war”.

When asked about the possibility of launching deep strikes on Russian territory using American weapons, Trump responded with restraint: “We will discuss it, it is an escalation, but we will discuss it”.

Commenting on the upcoming summit in Budapest, Trump noted that “it will most likely be my bilateral meeting with Putin, but we will be in contact with Zelensky. There is a lot of animosity between the two presidents (Zelensky and Putin)”. He also assured that the Ukrainian president would remain involved in the negotiation process: “President Zelensky will be in touch with us when I meet with Putin”.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine seeks peace, while Russia is not ready for it, and significant pressure needs to be exerted on Putin: “Ukraine also needs very clear security guarantees. This is the most important thing. I think we need to sit down and talk. Next, we need a ceasefire. We want peace, Putin doesn’t… We will talk to President Trump about what we need, we understand what we need to push Putin to the negotiating table. We are ready to talk in any format: bilateral or trilateral”.

US President Donald Trump has once again stressed the importance of military support for Ukraine. According to him, it is precisely strengthening the defense potential that can bring the end of the war closer: “We need the Tomahawks and a lot of the other weapons that we’re sending to Ukraine. That’s one of the reasons we want to end this war”.

Ukrainian President in his comments, drew attention to the difference in the approaches of the current American leader from his predecessor. He expressed hope that Trump will be able to use his influence to end the war.
