The tragic political climate within the European Union is most clearly evidenced by today`s statement from the European People`s Party [EPP]. Such a statement the Prime Minister of Georgia made at today`s briefing.

"Let me remind you that the EPP is the largest European party, uniting the majority of Europe`s ruling parties.

We also remind you that the United National Movement, which imposed a bloody authoritarian regime on Georgia and demonstrated total disregard for democracy, the rule of law, human rights over 9 years, is a member of the EPP.

In light of the recent attempts by the UNM and other radical opposition forces to overthrow the democratically elected Government, including severe physical assaults on police officers, 2 of whom narrowly escaped death, the EPP demands that sanctions be imposed on Bidzina Ivanishvili and other leaders of the ruling team, rather than on those responsible for undermining Georgian democracy.

This statement from the EPP is the clearest indication for the Georgian society yet of how the loss of sovereignty and the externally influenced European bureaucracy have steered the EU into a state of crisis", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
