I didn’t step down voluntarily, I was forced out, Zelensky remains a symbol of resistance, but Ukraine continues to wrestle with corruption and entrenched political elites - former Chief of Ukraine’s National Bank

Former Chief of the National Bank of Ukraine [July 2020-October 2022] writes on X that he didn’t step down voluntarily, he was forced out”.

“I didn’t step down voluntarily. I was forced out. Fleeing to Austria, I expected safety. Instead, I face a climate of intimidation. I received warnings of a possible abduction by Ukrainian security services and noticed men following me in Vienna, some presenting themselves as journalists. An Austrian money-laundering probe linked to my name was dropped quietly in June 2023, adding to doubts about Kyiv’s case.

Internationally, Zelenskyy remains a symbol of resistance, leading a country under siege by Russia’s military assault. Domestically, however, Ukraine continues to wrestle with corruption and entrenched political elites.

Is Ukraine delivering reform, or reverting to the same methods critics have long denounced?”, - writes Kyrylo Shevchenko.
