On Day 2 of conclave, black smoke again shows no new pope chosen

Plumes of black smoke billowed from a chimney on the rooftop of the Sistine Chapel around midday local time on Thursday (6 a.m. Eastern time), indicating that the scarlet-robed cardinals gathered inside have yet to elect a new pope after two rounds of voting on the second day of the conclave, writes The Washington Post.

There will be up to two more votes Thursday, with a total of four every day after until the Roman Catholic Church’s new leader is found. But there is higher anticipation for Thursday’s proceedings, as the past two pontiffs were chosen on Day 2 of the conclave: Pope Francis was elected in five rounds of voting, while his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, was elected in four.
