Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia together with President Mikheil Kavelashvili and Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, congratulated the Georgian National Academy of Sciences on its 85th anniversary.
Addressing an event marking the jubilee, the Prime Minister of Georgia highlighted the outstanding contributions of Georgian scientists and the country’s longstanding traditions of education and scientific scholarship.
“Georgia’s rich history laid a solid foundation for the establishment of the Academy of Sciences. However, the immediate prerequisite for its creation was the founding of Tbilisi State University under the leadership of Ivane Javakhishvili. Georgia’s first university paved the way for the emergence of various scientific disciplines, which subsequently continued to flourish within the Academy of Sciences.
From its very establishment, during the difficult years of World War II, the Academy became actively involved in advancing scientific research in Georgia.
Over the decades, the efforts of academicians and other scholars have resulted in numerous significant works in the humanities, natural sciences and exact sciences.
The Academy has also played an indispensable role in the development of Georgian statehood. Against the backdrop of contemporary global political, cultural and social challenges, a strong scientific community is of strategic importance to our country. The expertise and findings of scientists are of paramount importance to us and to every state institution in making decisions of national significance.
I am pleased that the Academy of Sciences and each of our scientists remain committed to meeting the challenges of our time and contributing to our country’s progress. For our part, I assure you that we will continue to deepen our cooperation and support the further strengthening of the Academy”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
The Georgian National Academy of Sciences also received anniversary congratulations from Mikheil Kavelashvili, Shalva Papuashvili and Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze. Protopresbyter Giorgi Zviadadze conveyed a congratulatory message from the Patriarch to the scientific community.
The jubilee session was opened by Roin Metreveli, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. Speakers at the session included Isa Habibbeyli, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; Asaf Hajiyev, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and Hirotake Maeda, Professor at the University of Tokyo.
The event was attended by members of the Government and Parliament of Georgia, as well as representatives of the scientific community.
