Georgia is among the top-performing countries, while Ukraine and Moldova are in Europe`s bottom three - Global Hunger Index

Georgia is among the 24 countries with the lowest levels of hunger, indicating that hunger is not considered a problem in the country. The relevant information is published in "2026 Global Hunger Index".

It should be mentioned that the European Commission has published a list of 98 countries worldwide where hunger remains a concern. Only 3 European countries - Ukraine, Moldova and Albania - were included on the list.

The Global Hunger Index is compiled by leading international organisations specialising in hunger assessment, including the international aid organisation Welthungerhilfe and the International Institute of Law of Peace and Armed Conflict [IFHV].

According to the report, less than 2.5% of Georgia’s population is undernourished. Child wasting affects 4.7% of children, while 0.6% experience stunted growth. The mortality rate among children under five stands at 0.9%.

The report also highlights Georgia`s significant improvement in the European rankings since 2012, when the country was among the five worst-performing countries in Europe according to the Global Hunger Index.

The index is assessed based on 4 factors:

1. Undernourishment: The share of the population whose caloric intake is insufficient.
2. Child wasting: The share of children under five with low weight-for-height, reflecting acute undernutrition.
3. Child stunting: The share of children under five with low height-for-age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.
4. Child mortality: The share of kids dying before age 5 (correcting the source text`s "5 days"), reflecting inadequate nutrition and unhealthy environments.
