As a result of operational measures and investigative actions conducted by the employees of the General Inspection Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a lawyer has been arrested on fraud charges.
As it was established that the defense lawyer deceptively demanded 10,000 GEL from the sister of a convict under his protection. The accused promised the woman that he would allegedly transfer this sum to the employees of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who in exchange for the money would resolve the issue of finalizing a plea bargain for her brother's case.
Furthermore, the accused demanded an additional 100,000 GEL from the convict's sister and lied, claiming that 40,000 GEL of this amount was to be handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office to secure a plea bargain under better terms, while the remaining 60,000 GEL would be deposited into the state budget.
The convict’s family member handed over 10,000 GEL to the lawyer to settle the matter.
Law enforcement officers arrested the lawyer as a suspect.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 180, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term of up to 7 years.
