The database of social assistance recipients needs to be reviewed, given that there was a kind of moratorium. The Prime Minister of Georgia said this during his speech in Parliament under the interpellation procedure.
As he added, the number of social aid recipients increased in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and since then, a kind of moratorium has been in effect regarding the review of the database.
“In reality, the database must be reviewed. The number of social assistance recipients cannot increase under conditions where poverty has been halved. We conducted a sort of preliminary analysis, which revealed that among the recipients of social aid, approximately 8% - about 8% out of those 708,000 people - are actually well-off; meaning they don’t just have indicators better than poverty, they are wealthy. This is a preliminary analysis. Naturally, the database of social assistance recipients requires a review, which has essentially not happened since 2020. Of course, this is also one of the government’s priorities and tasks”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
