Travel time on the Tbilisi-Batumi and Batumi-Tbilisi railway routes has been reduced to 4 hours. Prime Minister of Georgia together with Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development travelled on the Tbilisi-Batumi-Tbilisi train today.

He spoke about the reforms implemented in the railway sector of the country and noted that the modernization of the railway network will continue.

"Today, we travelled to Batumi on a train operating at a higher speed. Previously, the journey took five and a half hours, but now it has been reduced to four hours, which is an important improvement for passengers, our citizens and our visitors. This change is also significant from a tourism perspective. Over the past year, fundamental reforms have been implemented in Georgian Railways and the reduction in travel time for passenger services is one of the tangible results of these efforts. Many more initiatives are planned as part of the railway modernization programme. We have been regularly informing the public about these reforms and all of them will be implemented within the established timeframe", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

As a result of infrastructure improvements and the complete rehabilitation of the railway track, train speeds have increased and previous speed restrictions on the central railway corridor have been removed. The reduction in travel time has also been made possible by the completion of the railway modernization project on the mountain pass section of the line.
