The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia [PoG] has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal appropriation and embezzlement of property belonging to the Georgian Technical University [GTU], following a complaint submitted by the university’s Rector, David Gurgenidze.

“The Rector of the GTU applied to the PoG on October 17, 2025, noting facts of the illegal privatization of real estate - including land plots, buildings and the sports fields attached to them - located at 77 Kostava Street in Tbilisi and owned and used by the GTU, which were transferred to LLC University of Georgia.

The investigation, under Article 182, Part 2, Subparagraph ‘d’ and Part 3, Subparagraph ‘b’ of the Criminal Code of Georgia, was launched by the Department for Combating Corruption of the Prosecutor General’s Office on October 24. We will periodically update the public on the progress of the investigation and provide relevant legal assessments”, - reads the statement of PoG.

On October 17, David Gurgenidze appealed to the PoG to seize the property, which, according to him, had been taken by the family of Georgia’s former President Mikheil Saakashvili, and return it to the GTU.
