The President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili, met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization [WTO], Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in Geneva.
The sides discussed the existing cooperation between Georgia and the WTO, as well as current processes in the field of international trade. Attention was paid to the implementation of obligations undertaken by Georgia within the framework of the WTO, the process of economic reforms, and the importance of developing the multilateral trading system.
The parties emphasized that Georgia`s 26-year membership in the WTO has made a significant contribution to the economic modernization of the country, aligning its trade policy with international standards, and establishing a predictable environment for investments. During the meeting, they also spoke about Georgia`s transit potential and the growing importance of the Middle Corridor. It was noted that reforms implemented in the direction of trade facilitation and infrastructural development further strengthen Georgia`s role in connectivity between Europe and Asia.
The President of Georgia confirmed the country`s readiness to continue active cooperation with the WTO in the future and to support the strengthening of a free, fair, and rules-based multilateral international trading system.
