Parliament starts work on legislative package - Legal Aid Service becomes an accountable body to the Prime Minister instead of Parliament

The Parliament begins work on a new legislative package. The novelty is that the Legal Aid Service becomes an accountable body to the Prime Minister instead of the Parliament.

The issue will be considered by the Human Rights Committee at its first hearing today. According to the amendment, the Prime Minister is also granted the authority to appoint and dismiss the Director of the Service. The model for staffing the governing body of the Service - the Legal Aid Council - is changing.

Authors of the initiative claim that the amendments will increase the effectiveness of the Legal Aid Service`s activities and its monitoring.
