President of Georgia paid tribute to the country`s heroes who sacrificed their lives for Georgia`s freedom and independence exactly 18 years ago, speaking at the Mukhatgverdi Brothers` Cemetery.
"Today, we pay tribute to the heroes of Georgia who, exactly 18 years ago, sacrificed the most precious thing - their lives - for the freedom and independence of our homeland.
Once again, glory and honour to their eternal memory. Georgia is a country of ancient civilisation, and in different eras we have always had distinguished heroes and outstanding individuals who served as examples for our society. The August [2008] heroes, the soldiers, are an example for each of us of what a Georgian citizen and a Georgian soldier should be. Eternal memory to their souls", - said Mikheil Kavelashvili.
He also paid tribute to the service members who survived the war and continued serving in Georgia`s Defence Forces.
"Their colleagues, who continued their spirit and service in our Defense Forces and survived the war, from ordinary soldiers to the highest-ranking military personnel, are all inspired by the spirit of our heroes. Following their example, they continue strengthening and developing our armed forces. I also thank them", - added the President.
