In 2025, against the backdrop of favorable conditions in the foreign exchange market and strong macroeconomic fundamentals, the National Bank of Georgia [NBG] actively purchased foreign currency. In total, we purchased approximately 2.07 billion USD in the foreign exchange market during the January-November period of last year. Such a statement made today Tamta Sopromadze, Head of the Macroeconomics and Statistics Department of the NBG, while speaking about the record growth in foreign exchange reserves.
“The growth of foreign exchange reserves is the result of the correct and consistent policy pursued by the NBG. In addition, as part of the diversification of the reserve portfolio, as of December 2025, the share of monetary gold in international foreign exchange reserves is 16.3%, or 1,002.3 million USD. As a result of the increase in the price of gold, its value has doubled since the moment of purchase and added an additional 502.3 million USD to the reserves, which indicates the effectiveness of the NBG’s strategic approach”, - she adaded.
As of the end of 2025, the country’s international foreign exchange reserves reached a historically record figure of 6.16 billion USD. Compared to the previous year, the volume of reserves increased by 38%, or approximately 1.7 billion USD.
