From tomorrow [December 30] evening, the new section of the highway will open, connecting regions, people, and economic centres in a much shorter time. Such a statement the Prime Minister of Georgia made at the ceremony marking the completion of the Rikoti highway construction.

"Today, each of us is witnessing a historic event. The Rikoti project, regarded as the project of the century and of particular significance for our country, has now been completed. From tomorrow evening, the new section of the highway will open, connecting regions, people, and economic centres in a much shorter time. Naturally, this will provide a fresh impetus for our nation`s development. This is the most challenging section of the highway in every respect. Construction began in 2019. Given the engineering, geological, and technical complexities, the project is unprecedented in Georgia’s road infrastructure history. The figures speak for themselves: a 52-km, 4-lane expressway has been built, featuring 51 tunnels and 97 bridges.

The opening of the road will reduce the journey distance by 8 km and halve travel time, which will create far greater comfort both for our citizens and for visitors to our country. Travel here will be faster, safer, more comfortable.

This is more than just a project; it has created jobs. Over 4,000 people were employed throughout its duration, the vast majority of whom were our fellow citizens. Thousands of professionals contributed to its success, and I want to thank each of them for their relentless dedication. They include engineers, geologists, geotechnical specialists, environmental experts, and construction workers, each of whom deserves our particular gratitude. Special thanks also go to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the ministry’s leadership, the Roads Department, every member of staff. Without their tireless work, this project could not have been realized.

I also extend my gratitude to our international partners – to the Asian Development Bank, to the World Bank, to the European Investment Bank for your involvement and assistance.
