905 years since the historic victory – Georgia celebrates Didgoroba

Georgia marks today, August 12, the 905 anniversary of the Battle of Didgori, which led to the Georgian reconquest of Tbilisi from the 400-years-long Arab rule and the unification of Georgia under the Bagrationi dynasty.

The battle took place in 1211, at Didgori valley, some 40 km away from Tbilisi, with the Georgian army led by King David IV Aghmashenebeli defeating outnumbering Seljuk army led by Najm ad-Din Ilghazi, Artukid ruler of Mardin.

The event is referred to as a "miraculous victory" in Georgian historical sources. It was a decisive Georgian victory that led to the reconquest of Tbilisi and started the Georgian Golden Age.

Didgoroba is celebrated annually with various events, including cultural performances and historical reenactments, to honor the country`s rich heritage and its legacy of strength.
