Flames have engulfed Europe as the old continent faces scorching temperatures that have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, writes gazetaexpress.com.
“The dramatic situation is unfolding in Greece, mainly in Achaia, where the flames have spread on three fronts. Authorities have closed several roads, including the one from Patras to Pyrgos. Dozens of other fires are also active in Chios, Arta and Preveza, while the critical situation remains on the island of Zakynthos, where the flames have gotten out of control, especially in the village of Agalas, where houses have also been burned.
In Spain, over 6 citizens have been evacuated from their homes in the north, center and south of the country, as the thermometer has exceeded 44 degrees Celsius. An elderly man has died near Madrid after a fire gutted his house. Spain’s Interior Ministry has declared a General State Emergency Plan as the flames have scorched thousands of hectares of land.
In Italy, the battle with the flames on Mount Vesuvius has been going on for several days. The fire has scorched forests and killed wildlife, while smoke could be seen from Pompeii and Naples. Meanwhile, a red weather alert has been issued for 7 major cities in the country, including Bologna and Florence.
In the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale, more than 2 people were evacuated from their homes as forest fires approached residential areas. 77 people were taken to hospital with respiratory problems. More than 780 firefighters, including 10 planes, 9 helicopters and 200 fire engines, are battling the blaze. Authorities said on Tuesday that the flames had been brought under control. Meteorological data showed that Turkey had its hottest July in 55 years.
On the other hand, in the south of France, the first record-breaking summer temperatures were recorded at least 4 weather stations, with the thermometer reaching around 43 degrees. In Portugal, temperatures reached 44 degrees in some areas, as part of the country battles wildfires”.
