Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia, Ilia II, has issued a letter of condolence regarding the death of Eldar Shengelaia.
“A distinguished representative of our generation, Mr. Eldar Shengelaia, has left this temporal world and become a resident of eternity.
Everyone, and of course, our hearts are saddened by the separation from a great person endowed with outstanding creative talent. But his legacy, his magnificent films, remain in this world, which in various ways will always remind society of the truth that the true meaning of life is in serving goodness.
Mr. Eldar, like a large part of those who have gone through an atheistic period, went through a difficult inner life, to which was added the most difficult ordeal of separation from his daughter.
This great pain and search for the meaning of life led him to God and made him a believing Christian. There is nothing more significant in a person’s life than this.
We will offer prayers for Mr. Eldar, so that the Lord may grant his immortal soul a place of rest. "May he be established among the righteous and rest in the bosom of Abraham, and may his heartfelt friend and wife, Mrs. Nelly, his children, other family members, relatives and fans, be granted inner peace and the strength to pray for Mr. Eldar”, - reads the letter.
The legendary director died on August 4 at age 92. He will be buried today, August 7, alongside his parents, renowned actress Nato Vachnadze and director Nikoloz Shengelaia, as well as his brother, filmmaker Giorgi Shengelaia.
