Kutaisi City Court remands 4 people arrested on charges of violence in Chiatura

The Kutaisi City Court has sentenced four people arrested on charges of violence in Chiatura to pre-trial detention.

All four defendants attended the trial. The Prosecutor stated that there was a risk of influencing witnesses and absconding. The defense, which requested a bail of 5,000 GEL, disagreed with the arguments.

On April 29, four individuals were arrested on charges of assaulting Tengiz Koberidze, the director of the Shukruti mine, as tensions escalate in an ongoing labor dispute between miners and the management company in Chiatura.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said the suspects are charged with intentionally causing less serious harm to health, an offense punishable by up to 6 years in prison under Article 118, Part 2 of the Criminal Code.

According to protesters, 3 of the detainees – Giorgi Neparidze, Merab Saralidze, and Tengiz Gvelesiani – were taken from their protest tent, while Archil Chumburidze was arrested at his home. The arrests sparked protests in Chiatura.
