Ten doctors have been held professionally liable for the improper and excessive prescribing of psychotropic medications. According to the Ministry of Health, 1 doctor`s medical licence has been permanently revoked, 8 practitioners have been suspended from practice for 6 months, and 1 received a formal written warning.

Discussions regarding illegal prescription practices took place at the Professional Development Council of the Ministry of Health, which has identified significant shortcomings and risks.

It was revealed that some doctors issued prescriptions for psychotropic medications without proper justification, diagnosis, or consultation with the patient. Alarmingly, one patient was prescribed potent psychotropic drugs under different brand names, namely, Lyrica, Diazepam, and Baclofen, simultaneously. In certain cases, prescriptions were issued by practitioners lacking the necessary permits, and doses were sometimes 2 to 3 times higher than the recommended daily allowance.

The Minister of Health said, the violations uncovered through monitoring and analysis require appropriate action, which will be carried out in accordance with current legislation. As Mikheil Sarjveladze added, the Ministry is actively working on updating the regulatory framework to minimize such risks and strengthen oversight mechanisms.
