Ukraine`s actions, which threaten the energy security of Slovakia and Hungary, are completely unacceptable - joint letter of Slovakia and Hungary Foreign Ministers

The Slovak and Hungarian Foreign Affairs Ministers, Juraj Blanar and Peter Szijjarto, have sent a joint open letter to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and EU Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen on Friday concerning this.

The two foreign ministers called on the European Commission [EC] to immediately ensure adherence to commitments related to the security of energy supplies of EU-member states.

"We view it absolutely necessary for the EU to stand up for the interests of its member states and the energy security of its citizens, including the citizens of Slovakia. Any threat to the energy security of our country is unacceptable… During the recent attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline, oil supplies were last halted on Monday [18 August] and were quickly restored after repairs. However, the attack by Ukrainian forces on Thursday [21 August] seriously damaged the pipeline, and the extent of the damage, which will fundamentally affect supplies to the Slovak refinery, isn`t known yet.

Given that the EU and its member states provided Ukraine with support amounting to hundreds of billions of euros in recent years, we view Ukraine`s actions, which seriously threaten the energy security of Hungary and Slovakia, as completely unacceptable. In this connection, we strongly call on the Commission to immediately comply with the commitments included in the above-mentioned declaration and guarantee the safety of energy supply to its member states", - reads the joint letter of ministers.

According to the foreign media, the Ukrainian army has attacked the Druzhba oil pipeline infrastructure on the Russian territory 3 times in 9 days and supplies via this pipeline, which also transports oil to Slovakia and Hungary, have thus been suspended.
