A XVI-century gilded triptych, attributed to a follower of the Renaissance Italian master Bernardino Pinturicchio [1454–1513], has been returned to Georgia.
Through the initiative of Georgia`s Minister of Culture, Tinatin Rukhadze, and following negotiations with European partners, this treasure was acquired by the Art Palace of Georgia with financial support from the Ministry of Culture.
The triptych was brought to Georgia by Prince Achille Charles Louis Murat [1847-1895]. After his death, the piece first belonged to Andria Dadiani, then to Count Oldenburg. Following the Soviet occupation in 1921, the triptych was taken from Georgia along with other artefacts, acquired by a European collector.
The central panel of the triptych, showcasing evidence of XVII–XVIII century restoration, depicts the infant Jesus Christ alongside John the Baptist.
In 2025 Ministry of Culture has returned 3 painted canvases from Europe to the Art Palace: 2 paintings by a 16th-century Italian artist depicting all 4 evangelists, and Bouquet of Flowers by Dutch artist Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747).
