We are launching one of the largest expansion and development projects for Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport, which is yet another important result of the consistent policy of the Government of Georgia, stated Prime Minister of Georgia at the groundbreaking ceremony marking the launch of one of the largest expansion and development projects for Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport.
As he emphasized, the strategic importance of Tbilisi International Airport, noting that the investor will inject over 150 million USD in the project, substantially increasing the capacity of Georgia's main international gateway.
"Tbilisi International Airport is one of Georgia`s most important strategic infrastructure assets, playing a key role in the country`s economic development, connectivity, tourism and investment attractiveness. Modern and efficient infrastructure enhances national competitiveness, creates new jobs and strengthens Georgia`s position within the regional and global transport network. This is why our Government places particular emphasis on implementing projects of this scale. Upon completion, the airport`s annual passenger capacity will increase to 10 million passengers. Our priority is not only to develop infrastructure, but also to create a modern, comfortable environment that meets international standards for travelers", - added Irakli Kobakhidze.
He highlighted the importance of the expansion project against the backdrop of the rapid growth of Georgia’s aviation sector.
"In recent years, passenger traffic has reached record-high levels, international destinations have expanded and a number of new airlines have entered the Georgian market. All three of Georgia’s international airports-Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi-recorded unprecedented passenger growth, serving a combined 8.5 million passengers last year. Overall, 2025 was a record-high year both for passenger traffic and for the development of the tourism sector. Proceeds from tourism reached historic highs, which naturally had a positive impact on aviation.
Although we experienced a slight slowdown this year due to the broader crisis, June still set a new record in terms of passenger traffic. Accordingly, we remain highly optimistic about this year’s performance as well", - noted Irakli Kobakhidze.
He thanked everyone involved in implementing the airport expansion project, including international partners TAV Airports and the French aviation corporation - Groupe ADP, as well as all professionals contributing to the development of Georgia`s aviation sector.
The Prime Minster also commended Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia for her effective work, noting that the project is being implemented with maximum consideration of national interests.
Minister of Economy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of TAV Airports Frank Mereyde and General Manager of TAV Georgia Thea Zakaradze also addressed the audience, outlining the details and significance of the project.
To mark the official launch of the project, a symbolic time capsule was placed in the foundation of the new development. The ceremony was attended by members of the Government and Parliament of Georgia.
