The EU Ambassador to Georgia says when it comes to sanctions policy, “it is very difficult for the European Union because we need unanimity of 27 member states.”

“However, what has been happening in Georgia over the last 12 days, clearly calls for sanctions. And I know that there is work ongoing already to prepare sanctions. If we will reach unanimity. This depends on all 27 capitals. I think, I hope, it will be very difficult for any EU capital to disregard the level of violence, the level of brutality. Let’s see on Monday if the sanctions will be introduced. For sure, the preparatory work is already ongoing.

Two years ago, precisely a thousand days ago, Georgia government applied to join the European Union. We have granted Georgia status of a candidate country for the membership of the EU. By applying to join European Union, Georgia government has decided to go under the scrutiny of the European Commission.

We have a very clear process how to join the EU with very clear conditions. First, they were called 12 steps, now they are called nine steps. We expect Georgia government to introduce necessary reforms. One of those requirements where free and fair elections. Unfortunately, we had lots of irregularities that are incompatible for a country to join the EU. You are referring to the resolution of the European Parliament. Those resolutions are nonbinding.
