Parliament adopted amendments to the Law “On General Education” related to enrollment in primary education for the 2026-2027 academic year

According to the draft law on General Education, in the 2026–2027 academic year, by parental decision, children who turn 6 years old by December 31, 2026, will also be eligible to enroll in the first grade.

The draft law, which was adopted by Parliament on the III reading with 87 votes, was presented by the Deputy Education, Science and Youth Minister, Tamar Makharashvili.

According to the amendment, a special transitional provision is introduced, under which, only for the 2026–2027 academic year, and on a voluntary basis by parental decision, children who turn 6 years old between September 16, 2026, and December 31, 2026, will be allowed to begin studies at the primary level of general education. The draft law was considered by Parliament under an expedited procedure.
