Parliament adopted the draft law on Amendments to the Defence Code in the third reading with 85 votes in favour. The draft was presented during the plenary sitting by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Grigol Giorgadze.
The aim of the draft is to clarify the functions of the Defence Forces of Georgia and refine matters related to military service, including social guarantees, military registration, the organisation of national conscription, and the reserve service system.
The bill also includes provisions to further define matters related to military education and volunteering in the defence sector.
As a result of the Defence Code, amendments will also be introduced to several related legal acts. These include regulation of issues related to the completion or early termination of non-military, alternative labour service, as well as remuneration for conscripts enrolled in national military service.
According to the legislative package, failure to appear either before the conscription commission or the standing medical examination commission for the purpose of evading conscription will be considered a violation of the law.
