Former Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu announced his retirement from politics.
"I have decided to end my active participation in the political process, considering that this stage of the sovereignist movement, in my opinion, has come to an end", he wrote on his Facebook page.
He cited the desire to devote more time to family as the reason for ending his political career. The politician added that the decision was his personal choice.
The 1st round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote. Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Union for the Salvation of Romania party, has 19.17% of the vote. The 2nd round was scheduled to take place on December 8, as none of the candidates was able to gain more than 50%.
