At a sitting of the Foreign Relations Committee, the Speaker of the Parliament presented the 2025 activity report of the Parliamentary Delegation to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). As noted by Shalva Papuashvili, following many years of efforts, in 2023, AIPA granted the Parliament of Georgia observer status.

Since then, the Delegation has been actively engaged in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. During the reporting period, the Delegation participated in the 46th General Assembly and in the annual meeting of the Assembly’s Ad Hoc Working Group.

The 46th General Assembly of the AIPA was held on 16–22 September 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The Assembly was attended by a member of the Parliamentary Delegation of Georgia, Nikoloz Samkharadze. Approximately 400 delegates from member, observer, and guest countries took part in the event.

Nikoloz Samkharadze addressed the delegates gathered at the plenary session, speaking about the prospects and importance of strengthening cooperation between Georgia and the countries of Southeast Asia. In his address, he drew attention to the grave situation in the regions of Georgia occupied by Russia, violations of the rights of Georgians, the abduction of citizens along the occupation line, and the expulsion of Georgians from Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.

Within the framework of the session, a hearing on Georgia was held, during which the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, spoke about Georgia’s foreign policy priorities, as well as prevailing trends in the country, including an overview of the economic, political, and social situation and successful reforms implemented across various sectors.

Delegations of the member states of the AIPA expressed firm support for the territorial integrity of Georgia and their willingness to strengthen cooperation with Georgia in various areas.

Alongside the General Assembly, Samkharadze held bilateral meetings with the Vice-Speaker of the Senate of Malaysia and the Chairperson of the Foreign Relations and Trade Committee of the Malaysian House of Representatives.

As for the annual meeting of the AIPA Ad Hoc Working Group, it was held on 14–17 July 2025 in Phnom Penh, the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and was dedicated to issues of peace and security.

Nikoloz Samkharadze participated in the meeting, where he highlighted the grave situation in Georgia`s occupied regions and expressed gratitude to the member states of the Assembly for their firm support of Georgia`s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also spoke about global security challenges, Russia`s occupation, developments in the Black Sea region, and emphasized the necessity of adhering to the principles of international law to achieve peace. Nikoloz Samkharadze reaffirmed Georgia`s commitment to contribute to the implementation of peace initiatives.

Within the framework of the session, Nikoloz Samkharadze also met with the Chairperson of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate of Cambodia, who currently serves as the Secretary General of the AIPA.

"For Georgia, as an observer country, AIPA remains an important platform of parliamentary diplomacy, enabling us to establish direct contacts with Southeast Asian countries, gain a better understanding of the region`s priorities and challenges, strengthen Georgia`s non-recognition policy, and define directions for cooperation. In today`s world, where international relations are rather tense and complex, this format represents a valuable platform for dialogue and cooperation", - said Shalva Papuashvili.
