Georgian scientist, teacher, Doctor of Philology Rismag Gordeziani has died at the age of 85

Rismag Gordeziani, the renowned Georgian Hellenist, founder of the TSU Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, TSU Emeritus Professor, Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, and Corresponding Member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences, has died at the age of 85. 

Gordeziani graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Tbilisi State University. In 1967-1976, he was an associate professor at the Department of Classical Philology of Tbilisi State University; in 1976-2006 - professor at the Department of Classical Philology; in 1982-2006 - Head of the Mediterranean Cultures Research Laboratory of Tbilisi State University; in 1993-2006 – the vice-rector of Tbilisi State University. 

Since 1997, he has been the director of the Institute of Classical Philology, Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies of Tbilisi State University. Since 2006, he has been a full professor at Tbilisi State University.

Rismag Gordeziani has received the Order of Merit of the Hellenic Republic, the First Scientific Prize of Tbilisi State University. He was the author of about 150 scientific papers, monographs and 24 books. In 2021, he received the Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi Award.
