A high-ranking parliamentary delegation of the Georgian Dream held meetings in China aimed at deepening cooperation between the countries.
The parliamentary delegation includes: Member of the Political Council/Vice-Speaker of Parliament - Giorgi Volski, Member of the Political Council/Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee, Mariam Lashkhi, Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee, Shota Berekashvili, Chairman of the Agrarian Issues Committee, Gela Samkharauli.
Georgian politicians held multi-sectoral meetings with the Chinese ruling party, the Chinese People’s Congress, Ministry of Center for Language Education and Cooperation, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Shenzhen municipal Government, and leading technology corporations.
Georgia is considered a state of geostrategic importance, representing the main network node of the transcontinental transport Middle Corridor between Europe and Asia. The functional importance of transit infrastructure has increased significantly since 2022, reflected in a 30% increase in cargo turnover. Official positions of the European Union confirm the international importance of regional cooperation.
For China, strengthening relations with Georgia is a component of the formation of an alternative mechanism for connecting to European markets, which is especially relevant in the geopolitical context of restrictions on the functioning of northern transport channels.
The main objectives of the visit include the consolidation of inter-party mechanisms, the multi-sectoral development of the China-Georgia strategic partnership in the fields of education, agriculture and economic cooperation, which represents the socio-economic interests of the Georgian people and Georgia’s readiness to play an important connecting role between the East and the West.
Georgia’s capabilities as a transit state emphasise its systemic importance in a new configuration of Eurasian trade, where access to the market of 2.3 billion consumers is ensured through the instruments of multilateral free trade agreements.
“The importance of the Middle Corridor had been discussed for a long time, but today this topic იs extremely important for everyone - both for the East and the West - and the connection of these two markets could not be achieved without the Middle Corridor. Georgia’s geopolitical location meets the standards required for the development of the historical Silk Road, and significant changes will occur through Georgia, which will primarily have a positive impact on the economic and social situation of the Georgian people”, - said Gia Volski, the First Vice Speaker of Parliament.
