Speaker of the Georgian Parliament responds to the yesterday’s questioning of Giorgi Gakharia, former Prime Minister/Minister of Internal Affairs at the Parliament’s Interim Fact-Finding Commission on the social media.

“During his testimony, Giorgi Gakharia became ensnared in contradictions regarding several matters. Of particular concern is the foreign interference surrounding the detention of [Nika] Melia, as well as Gakharia’s evident confusion.

After initially evading the question

-he struggled to recall whether he had met with an ambassador from any country. -he admitted to a meeting but could not specify the subject matter.
-he eventually acknowledged that it pertained to Melia’s case and stated that he had been informed of Melia’s impending arrest.

Who can possibly believe such a fabrication?

Moreover, he has inexplicably cast the former Ambassador into a scandal.

Observing the former Prime Minister engage in repeated dishonesty was a disheartening spectacle.

Why was he so tense in responding to such a straightforward question, or when attempting to avoid it altogether?

When he references the “invisible person”, today we all recognize who attempted to meddle in Georgian politics, the judiciary, or social life. Both we and the new US administration have brought this to light.

Despite his attempts to sidestep the issues, Gakharia’s testimony ultimately confirmed that, as Prime Minister, he acted covertly and followed the directives of foreign representatives rather than the mandate assigned by Parliament.

-Just 27 minutes after this announcement, Gakharia declared his resignation.
