Ecumenical Patriarch to attend Funeral Service of Patriarch Ilia II in Tbilisi

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will travel early on Sunday morning, March 22, 2026, to Tbilisi in order to preside over the funeral service of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia, confirming the article of orthodoxtimes.com.

The funeral will take place at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi (Sameba Cathedral). The Ecumenical Patriarch’s presence confirms earlier reports and reflects the desire of the Mother Church of Constantinople to personally express condolences and support to the hierarchy, clergy, monastics, authorities, and faithful people of Georgia.

Patriarch Bartholomew will be accompanied by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon, along with members of his patriarchal entourage, including senior clergy and officials of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Following the funeral service, the Ecumenical Patriarch and his delegation are expected to return to Constantinople later the same day.
