Expanding the range of export products and entering new high-spending international consumer markets is a joint task of the state and private sector; market diversification is the main guarantee of stability and long-term competitiveness - Kobakhidze

Agriculture is one of the key pillars of Georgia’s economy and a driving force of regional development. Our goal is to support the modernization of rural areas, including through the establishment of strong, technologically-advanced and business-oriented farming enterprises, the Prime Minister of Georgia said during his speech at the presentation of the Agricultural Development Index.

As he highlighted, the importance of accurate analytics in planning effective economic policy and thanked Galt & Taggart for creating the Agricultural Development Index, which reflects both the progress achieved in the sector and the challenges it faces.

“This instrument, with its indicators on productivity, prices and investments, gives us a clear picture of where progress has been made and where more work is needed. In 2025, our food market reached 21.5 billion GEL. Since 2019, this volume has almost doubled and according to current trends we expect the market to reach 30 billion GEL by 2030. Our main objective is to meet this growing demand through local production.

Today, we still remain significantly dependent on imports in areas such as meat, dairy products and grains. Key challenges include land fragmentation, limited technology and low productivity. In addressing these challenges, the state is the main partner of business. The agricultural credit subsidy program has already produced tangible results - since 2018, the sector"s total output has nearly doubled. However, much work still lies ahead.

Export development deserves special attention. Today, foreign sales amount to 4.5 billion GEL. This is a significant figure, but the reality is that exports still rely mainly on a limited number of products. Expanding the range of export products and establishing a presence in new high-spending international markets is a joint task of the state and the private sector. Market diversification is the main guarantee of our stability and long-term competitiveness”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

Speeches at the presentation of the Agricultural Development Index were also delivered by David Songhulashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and Archil Gachechiladze, CEO of Bank of Georgia JSC. The event was attended by members of the Government and Parliament of Georgia, as well as representatives of the business community.
