Through the joint efforts of the National Bank and commercial banks, we have an exemplary banking sector throughout the region - Kobakhidze

We pursue a liberal economic policy, being open to investments and economic activity, and everything will be done in the future to maximally promote economic development, a considerable factor for strengthening the national currency, Georgian Prime Minister stated at the international conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the GEL’s introduction into circulation.

According to the Head of Government, GEL is one of the major symbols of statehood, public trust in GEL has been growing as a result of economic stability.

"As we celebrate the anniversary of the GEL, through the joint efforts of the National Bank of Georgia [NBG] and commercial banks, we have an exemplary banking sector throughout the region. Our country stands out for rapid economic growth. In this regard, we are the leaders not only in the region, but across the continent in general.

Over the past 4 years, Georgia`s economic growth made up almost 10%, a very impressive statistic. Inflation is very close to our targeted indicator, i.e. 3%. We have a very high quality of fiscal consolidation. According to projections from international financial institutions, Georgia is poised to be among the top three countries worldwide in terms of economic growth. We must do everything to continue this path of development", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

As he added, despite geopolitical challenges, external shocks, and turbulence, the country"s macroeconomic stability and peace ensure the robustness of the national currency, a factor contributing to the development of the economic system: "The Georgian banking system, one of the largest employers in the country, is growing year after year. The system`s assets reach almost 100 billion GEL, surpassing the indicators of many Eastern European countries. The NBG and the financial system in its entirety are adamant in observing international sanctions and local legislation. Not a single fact of Georgia`s financial sector defying international sanctions has been reported. The NBG`s regulations and supervisory framework are in perfect harmony with advanced international practices, and the role of the financial sector in this success is invaluable".
