Gori District Court placed 6 policemen in pretrial detention on charges of abuse of official authority committed with violence

The Gori District Court placed 6 policemen in pretrial detention on charges of abuse of official authority committed with violence.

The decision follows their arrest by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia [PoG].

As Prosecutor Mikheil Beriashvili said, 6 persons have been charged and arrested:

“Charges have been brought against them under the relevant articles. As for the possible expansion of the group of persons involved, the investigation is ongoing. It is the duty of the Prosecutor’s Office to conduct a comprehensive, full, and objective investigation, and that is exactly what is happening. Some of the questioned defendants provide information to the investigation, while others do not - that is their right”.

The PoG arrested 6 individuals in Gori on charges of violently exceeding official authority in connection with actions taken by police officers.

They were indicted under subparagraph ‘b’ of the third part of Article 333 of the Criminal Code that pertains to 5-8 years imprisonment as the punishment measure.

On May 27, video footage was circulated showing officers of the Shida Kartli Police physically assaulting two individuals during an arrest in the so-called Kombinati district of Gori.
