Speaker of the Georgian Parliament was asked to comment on a statement by U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, in which she said that the war in Ukraine must end in a way that benefits the US and the West.

“What we see here is precisely what we have been talking about; every country acts in accordance with its own interests.

Yesterday evening, when we witnessed the United National Movement’s rally, those people were busy convincing their supporters that someone out there in the world cares more about Georgia’s national interests than a Georgian person and Georgia’s own government do. This is not even a bitter truth; it is simply reality, and it has always been so.

Relations between states have never, historically, been arranged any other way. So this slip of the tongue, or deliberate statement, on her part reveals exactly what we are dealing with in international politics.

Senator Shaheen held precisely the same attitude towards Georgia: she viewed Georgia purely in terms of what Georgia could do for her country’s interests. Quite another matter is how correctly she understands the interests of the US”, - said Shalva Papuashvili.
