A session of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church will be held today at the Patriarchate of Georgia.
Bishops are expected to select three candidates for the Patriarchal throne. They will be chosen by secret ballot. Every bishop is entitled to vote for a bishop who meets the criteria set out in the statute governing the administration of the Georgian Church.
At an expanded assembly, scheduled to be held before May 17, the Synod will choose the 142nd Patriarch of Georgia from among the candidates selected today.
If none of the candidates receives a majority of votes at the expanded council, a second round will be held between the two candidates who receive the highest number of votes.
The date of the expanded council will also be set during this session.
