Georgia’s Constitutional Court to begin hearings on lawsuit seeking ban on 5 opposition parties

The Constitutional Court releases a statement regarding the hearings scheduled for October 21, 22, and 23.

“According to the authors of the constitutional lawsuit, the violation of the first sentence of Paragraph 3 of Article 23 of the Constitution of Georgia by the five political parties indicated in the lawsuit is clearly confirmed. This, on the one hand, has already manifested in an attempt to overthrow and violently change the constitutional order of Georgia, and on the other hand, is revealed in the existence of a future goal to overthrow and violently change the constitutional order of Georgia.

The plaintiff side believes that the relevant facts and arguments presented in the lawsuit, taking into account the approaches of the Constitution of Georgia and the European Court of Human Rights, jointly create a solid basis for banning unconstitutional political parties. For this reason, the members of the Parliament of Georgia demand that the Constitutional Court declare the activities of the defendant political parties unconstitutional and ban them”, - reads the statement.

From tomorrow, the Plenum of the Constitutional Court of Georgia will consider the case on its merits.
