According to the data for the first 9 months of 2026, railway transportation increased by 13% and reached a record figure for the last decade. Prime Minister of Georgia said this in his speech at the event dedicated to the Day of the Railwayman.

As he noted, restoration of the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe railway route is being completed, as a result of which the old travel time, 6 hours, will be halved and it will take only 3 hours to travel from Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe.

"Along with the purchase of new passenger trains, the rehabilitation of the existing rolling stock is underway. We are also completing the restoration of the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe railway route, as a result of which the old travel time of 6 hours will be halved and it will take only 3 hours to travel from Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe. Also, a new Tbilisi-Kutaisi passenger flight is planned, and a very important and sensitive project for us, the restoration of the Borjomi-Bakuriani historical railway, is planned. As a result of the changes made, the travel time from Tbilisi to Batumi has already been reduced by an hour and a half, from 5.5 hours to 4 hours, which is benefiting our citizens and our guests, while the time for freight trains to cross the territory of Georgia has been halved, which is very important for strengthening our transit function. According to the data for the first 9 months of 2026, railway transportation increased by 13% and is the highest in the last decade. It has reached a record high", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
