There was a disturbance yesterday near the so-called Deserters’ Market, it was prompted by information disseminated by the market administration regarding plans to improve the site, said today the Mayor of Tbilisi.

“As you are aware, the so-called Deserters’ Market is privately owned. The owner intends to improve the site and carry out construction works.

The existing conditions there are beyond criticism: the area is unsanitary and disorderly. The Municipality has issued the relevant permit for the improvement and rehabilitation of the site. It is fundamentally important to us that this process does not adversely affect or cause losses to the people employed there.

Some of those working at the market face hardship and work there every day. They need solidarity and support, and we will provide them with every possible assistance. We will do everything within our power to ensure that those employed at the market are not left without work during the rehabilitation period. We call upon the market administration to provide traders with a reasonable timeframe and a suitable space in which to continue their activities until the improvement works are completed. I am also instructing Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze to involve in the process”, - said Kakha Kaladze.
