The PISA 2025 study results have been released. According to the report, compared to the findings from 2022, Georgia has demonstrated improvement across all key domains, marking its highest achievements in mathematics and natural sciences in the last ten years.

“The study revealed that:

Georgia ranks first among the 91 participating countries globally in terms of improving student achievement in science;

Amid a global decline in student attainment, Georgia maintains a stable trajectory of improvement and positive momentum; the international trend points to a downturn across all three core subjects, but our country bucked the trend by raising its performance;

The proportion of low-achieving students decreased, meaning a smaller percentage of pupils recorded low scores in 2025 relative to previous years;

Georgia ranks among the top three nations out of 91 for reducing its proportion of low-performing students;

A narrowing performance gap between urban and rural schools further highlights progress towards educational equity, with rural pupils showing a notable rise in science and mathematics attainment;

Compared to OECD member states, a student’s socio-economic status and related background factors exert a lower impact on academic achievement in Georgia, which is an unequivocally positive metric. Specifically, Georgia boasts a higher proportion of ‘academically resilient pupils’ who, despite low socio-economic status, attain high scores on the PISA assessment;

The survey also revealed that pupils view their learning environment positively. According to survey responses, Georgia’s metrics regarding school climate, encompassing sense of belonging, discipline, and anti-bullying levels, equal or exceed the international average;

Pupils also express confidence regarding opportunities for social mobility within the country;

Although the 2022 results highlighted the pandemic’s damaging impact on global attainment, Georgia’s performance held largely steady. The nation bucked the international trend of steep decline, seeing only a slight drop in reading in line with global averages;

Science served as the primary domain of assessment in 2025. Cross-country and cross-economy comparisons demonstrate that Georgia outperformed nations such as:

Bulgaria
Moldova
Kazakhstan
Malaysia
Cyprus
North Macedonia
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Brazil
Argentina in science attainment.

Crucially, while 81 nations participated in the preceding 2022 PISA cycle, the count expanded to 91 nations for the 2025 evaluation, rendering Georgia’s progress even more pronounced.

The 2025 assessment marks the 9th cycle of the study. Previously conducted triennially, the PISA cycle duration has been extended to four years as of 2025.

Administered under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has been running since 2000. Georgia joined the assessment for the first time in 2010.

PISA evaluates how well 15-year-old students are prepared to meet the challenges of adult life. The core assessment domains include reading literacy, mathematics, and natural sciences.
