The public must know what decisions the government of that time made and what the consequences of those decisions were. Such a statement made today the President of Georgia, while talking about the August War and the issue of associated political responsibility.

As he noted, at a time when Georgian military personnel fought with exceptional bravery and the heroes of Shindisi demonstrated a distinguished example of self-sacrifice, the country’s government bore a particular responsibility to the state and society.

In his assessment, concentrating the public discussion solely on the issue of who started the war shifts attention away from the responsibility of the then-government.

“They do not want the Georgian people to know what the government of that time did, and for us to fully comprehend their war crimes. It was precisely their reckless actions that caused us to lose an additional 120 villages and hundreds of human lives”, - said Mikheil Kavelashvili.

As he added, for a comprehensive assessment of the tragic consequences of the August War, it is vital for the public to know both the circumstances of the war and the actions of the government during that period.
