Record figures recorded in Georgia`s transport sector

Georgia`s transport sector had posted record-breaking results in the first 6 months of 2026. The relevant information was published by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

According to the agency, cargo volumes handled by Georgia`s seaports and terminals increased across all individual ports and terminals, as well as across every cargo category.

The total volume of cargo handled at the country`s seaports and terminals rose by 22% year-on-year to 9.7 million tonnes, marking the highest first-half figure recorded in the past decade.

During the reporting period, Georgian seaports handled 409,397 TEU of container traffic, up 9% compared to the same period last year and also the highest 1st-half result of the past decade.

"The several categories of cargo processed at ports and terminals had not been transported during the corresponding period of the 2025. These included steel and various types of pipes, gold and copper concentrates, several types of liquid cargo, while volumes of other cargo categories also increased significantly.

The 1st half of 2026 was also particularly successful for Georgian Railway, with total freight transportation increasing by 10% to 6.9 million tonnes, representing the highest 1st-half result of the past decade.

In June 2026 alone, Georgian Railway transported 12,049 TEU, the highest monthly figure recorded over the past 10 years.

The increase in rail freight volumes was accompanied by positive growth across all transport segments, including imports, exports, transit and domestic shipments. Georgian Railway has also significantly expanded the range of products it now transports", - says the Ministry of Economy.
