The US Embassy published a statement from the U.S. State Department concerning meetings held by State Department representatives with members of the Georgian government during a visit to Georgia.

Meeting with the Government of Georgia:

"The U.S. delegation visited Tbilisi on May 25-28 and met with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Vice Prime Ministers Maka Botchorishvili and Mamuka Mdinaradze, and other government representatives to discuss the path forward for improving bilateral relations.

The delegation conveyed to the Georgian government the [Donald] Trump Administration`s readiness to engage constructively and in a future-oriented manner, and its interest in opening a new chapter in bilateral relations between sovereign partners: one founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and candid dialogue.

The two sides discussed potential areas of convergence between the United States and Georgia, including a shared commitment to national sovereignty, a fair economic environment, resilience against harmful external influences, and the fundamental values that define both nations. This convergence provides a solid foundation from which to advance towards a deeper partnership.

The delegation underscored the United States` interest in expanding commercial cooperation with Georgia. This includes ensuring broader access for American goods and investment, and deepening cooperation in the fields of security and energy. A sustained strategic partnership will require continued progress in establishing the conditions that make Georgia a credible partner, including a business environment favourable to American enterprises and a stable domestic political climate conducive to opposition engagement.

The delegation discussed specific measures that the Georgian government is capable of implementing to help achieve this goal. The US looks forward to working with the Georgian government towards a partnership that will deliver tangible benefits to both countries and fully realize the potential of the bilateral relationship.

Meeting with the leaders of Georgia`s opposition parties:

The U.S. delegation held in-depth discussions with representatives of Georgia`s principal opposition parties, including the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, Strong Georgia–Lelo, and the party Gakharia for Georgia.

The delegation heard concerns regarding the treatment of opposition parties since October 2024, including the case currently before the Constitutional Court and the prevailing political climate.

The delegation shared the US’ position on opposition participation in Georgia`s democratic institutions. A functional democracy requires a political opposition that engages with state institutions to represent the interests of the citizens who voted for it. Political stability and genuine opposition representation are among the factors that make Georgia a credible partner for American investment, security cooperation, and long-term strategic partnership.

The United States is committed to constructive engagement with all serious political actors who have a stake in their country’s stability, sovereignty and prosperity", - reads the statement.
