The Prosecution Service of Georgia has charged one individual with joining a foreign terrorist organization, assisting terrorist activities, and the illegal purchase and possession of ammunition, and has charged two other individuals with the illegal purchase and possession of firearms, ammunition, explosive devices, and explosive substances.

An investigation conducted by the Counterterrorism Center of the State Security Service of Georgia established that one of the accused joined the terrorist organization Islamic State and actively participated in armed activities carried out by the organization. Ammunition was also unlawfully stored at his residence. Two individuals connected to the accused were found to be unlawfully storing explosive substances, explosive devices, ammunition, and firearms at their homes. During the searches, investigators also seized, among other items, a flag bearing the symbols of the terrorist organization.

One accused was charged under Article 328 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (joining a foreign terrorist organization and assisting its terrorist activities) and Article 236 §3 (illegal purchase and possession of ammunition), which carries a sentence of up to 17 years of imprisonment. The other two defendants were charged under Article 236 §3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (illegal purchase and possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosive substances), which carries a sentence of up to six years of imprisonment.

The Prosecution Service will file a motion with the court within the time limit established by law to request detention as a preventive measure for the accused.
