Officers of Tbilisi Police, Central Criminal Police Department, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti and Adjara Police Departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs have arrested 14 people on charges of illegal purchase, storage and sale of firearms and ammunition, and 2 have been exposed.
As a result of personal searches and search activities held in residential houses and storage rooms of the accused persons, various models of firearms, ammunition and explosive devices were seized as evidence.
Herewith, the Central Criminal Police and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance have foiled the import of ammunition and explosives into the country.
The police detained the accused person in the territory of the "Batumi Port" and the "Sarpi" customs checkpoint. During a detailed inspection of the vehicles they were driving, 2 hand grenades, 2 detonators and up to 150 cartridges for various models of firearms were seized. The investigation is underway under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to 9 years.
