Head of Government Administration opens an International Conference on Intellectual Property

Head of Government Administration of Georgia opened an international conference titled: From Research to Impact - The Role of Patents in Technology Transfer.

According to Levan Zhorzholiani, the productive cooperation between the Government of Georgia and the European Patent Organization [EPO], noting that partnership with the European Patent Office serves as an important foundation for the further development of the system in Georgia and its closer alignment with European standards.

"A Validation Agreement for European Patents has been concluded between the Government of Georgia and the EPO. This agreement represents not only a legal mechanism for validating European patents in Georgia, but also an important platform for cooperation between Georgia and the European Patent Office. In 2025, Georgia expressed its interest in acceding to the European Patent Convention. Accession to the Convention also implies joining the EPO, which in turn means Georgia’s full integration into the European patent system", - said Levan Zhorzholiani.

As he noted, a patent is not only a legal mechanism, but also an important instrument of economic policy, creating a predictable and reliable environment for innovators, businesses and investors: "For Georgia, establishing a strong and competitive innovation ecosystem is a priority, which requires both the improvement of the legal framework and the strengthening of institutional capacity. In this context, it is important not only to have a robust legal framework-toward which many steps have been taken in recent years-but also to integrate the patent system into the processes of innovation, business development and investment support".

Speakers at the conference included Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Givi Mikanadze, Deputy Speaker of Parliament MP Nino Tsilosani, Chairman of Sakpatenti Soso Giorgadze, President of the European Patent Office Antonio Campinos and Principal Director of the EPO Academy Xavier Seuba.

The international conference was attended by representatives of government agencies, international organizations, academia and the innovation and technology sectors.
